Resident Evil 3: Nemesis – Jill Valentine’s Last Escape

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, released in 1999 for the PlayStation, is a survival horror game that serves as a side story to the events of Resident Evil 2. It takes place 24 hours before and after the events of Resident Evil 2, focusing on Jill Valentine, a former S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) member, as she tries to escape a T-virus-infested Raccoon City.

The main antagonist is the titular Nemesis, a relentless and intelligent bioweapon created by the Umbrella Corporation with one goal: to hunt down and eliminate all remaining S.T.A.R.S. members. The game begins with Nemesis killing Jill’s former teammate, Brad Vickers, and the chase begins.

Jill eventually meets three members of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.): Mikhail Victor, Nicholai Ginovaef, and Carlos Oliveira. Together, they try to reach the city’s clock tower to signal a rescue helicopter, but their plan is foiled by the pursuing Nemesis. During the escape, Jill is infected with the T-virus, and Carlos must find a vaccine to save her.

Gameplay and New Features

Resident Evil 3 maintains the core survival horror gameplay of its predecessors—fixed camera angles, tank controls, and puzzle-solving—but with a few key additions that make it a more action-oriented experience.

  • The Nemesis: The most significant new feature is the Nemesis itself. He is not a scripted enemy but a persistent threat that will follow you through a number of areas, smashing through walls and obstacles to get to you. You can choose to either fight him for rewards or flee to conserve resources.
  • Live Selection: At certain points in the game, you are given a “Live Selection” choice, where you must make a quick decision that can change the story’s direction, leading to different scenarios, character encounters, and even endings. This adds significant replayability.
  • Dodge and 180-Degree Turn: The game introduces a new Dodge move, which allows you to evade enemy attacks, and a 180-degree turn, which lets you quickly turn around to run from a threat. These moves make combat feel more fluid and dynamic.
  • Ammo Creation: You can now combine different types of gunpowder to create new ammunition. This adds a new layer of resource management to the game.
