In Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, you step into the shoes of Huang Lee, a young Triad member who’s just arrived in Liberty City. His mission was simple: deliver an ancient family sword to his uncle to secure his father’s legacy. But things go wrong immediately. He’s ambushed, shot, and left for dead in the harbor. Now, surviving against the odds, Huang is hell-bent on revenge, desperate to recover the stolen sword and restore his family’s honor.

While the game carries the DNA of the 3D *GTA* titles with its mission-based structure, it makes a bold return to the classic top-down perspective, rendered in a stylish cel-shaded art style. All the modern comforts are there: a safehouse to store cars and check emails, and a customizable GPS to help you navigate the city’s streets. If you want to re-live the action, you can replay any completed mission right from your home base.

Beyond story missions, the game’s most infamous feature is its deep drug-trading economy. Using your PDA, you can buy and sell six different types of narcotics—like weed, cocaine, and LSD—constantly hunting for the best deal across the city. You’ll get tips about dealers looking to buy high or sell low, but be careful: making a huge score will attract police attention, and if you get busted, you lose everything you’re carrying.

For more direct action, you can hijack armored drug vans for a quick score or take on well-guarded Amm-u-nation trucks to score free weapons. The police chases have gotten a clever upgrade. Instead of just wanted stars, a police car icon now represents each pursuing cop. You can still duck into a Pay ‘n’ Spray, but you can also fight your way out by smashing the cop cars tailing you to lower your wanted level.

The experience was tailored uniquely for each platform. On the Nintendo DS, the stylus was used for everything—hotwiring cars, scratching off lottery tickets, and even throwing Molotov cocktails. You could even blow into the microphone to hail a cab. The PSP version, played with the analog stick, added all-new missions and extra radio stations, making each version of the game a distinct experience.
