Resistance: Retribution picks up several weeks after the events of Resistance: Fall of Man. You play as James Grayson, a former British Marine who embarks on a vengeful crusade after discovering his brother has been infected by the Chimeran virus. His mission: destroy every conversion center he can find. Eventually, his skills catch the attention of the Maquis resistance group, who recruit him to help liberate Europe from Chimera control.
The game shifts the series into a third-person perspective, introducing a cover system that lets Grayson automatically snap behind objects for protection. From cover, he can lean out to aim and fire at enemies with assisted targeting, creating tense and tactical firefights.
A standout feature for its time was connectivity with Resistance 2 on PS3. By linking the PSP via USB, players unlocked “Infected Mode”—an alternate storyline where Grayson is infected with a modified Chimeran virus. In this mode, he gains enhanced abilities like health regeneration, underwater breathing, and access to hidden paths and Intel. Progress isn’t saved, but it offers a fun, arcade-like twist on the campaign.
Multiplayer is robust for a handheld title, supporting both local (Ad Hoc) and online (Infrastructure) play with modes like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Assimilation. Stats were tracked on the now-defunct MyResistance.net, adding a competitive community layer.
