In Sonic Rivals 2, players dive back into the high-speed, competitive platforming that defined the first game—racing through vibrant 3D stages while battling a rival to reach the goal first. Power-ups are once again scattered throughout each course, letting you unleash attacks to slow down your opponent or defend yourself. Boss stages return as well, challenging you to take down a formidable foe before your rival does. Completing various tasks and events also rewards you with collectible cards, adding replay value and customization.
This sequel expands the roster significantly, bringing together fan favorites like Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, Metal Sonic, and Tails, along with newcomers Espio the Chameleon and Rouge the Bat. Each character brings their own unique abilities and style to the race.
For those looking to enjoy the courses without the pressure of competition, a new Freeplay mode allows you to revisit previously cleared stages solo. Multiplayer has also been enhanced with a variety of new modes—including Knockout, Ring Battle, Race, King of the Hill, Capture the Chao, and Tag—offering plenty of ways to challenge friends in fast-paced, head-to-head action.
