Sonic Rivals reinvents the classic Sonic formula for the PSP, blending high-speed platforming with competitive racing in dynamic 2.5D stages. Instead of simply reaching the goal, you must outrun and outmaneuver a rival character—Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, or Metal Sonic—each with their own unique abilities and story-driven motivations. The game features six zones, each split into two acts culminating in a boss battle. These fights are races against time and your rival—you must defeat the boss before your opponent does to progress. Beyond Story Mode, Challenge Mode and Cup Mode offer additional objectives and structured tournaments, while wireless multiplayer lets you compete against friends in head-to-head matches.
During races, you can collect power-ups and unleash special attacks to slow your rival or gain a burst of speed. Shoving opponents off ledges or into hazards adds a tactical edge to the blistering pace. Completing specific challenges earns you collectible cards, which can be traded wirelessly, encouraging replayability and customization.
