WRC: FIA World Rally Championship (2005), developed by Traveller’s Tales for the PlayStation Portable, is an officially licensed racing game featuring the 2005 FIA World Rally Championship’s teams, drivers, cars, and stages. Players race against the clock on clear tracks, with rival cars appearing as ghost vehicles, true to real-world rally racing. Co-driver notes, delivered both verbally and on-screen, guide players through twisty, challenging courses across 16 global rallies, including Japan and Mexico, plus 19 bonus stages.

Gameplay Modes

The game offers a variety of modes to suit different playstyles:

  • Quick Rally: Jump into a randomly selected car and stage for a fast, no-frills race.

  • Time Trial: Race against a ghost car representing the stage’s best time, pushing players to beat the clock.

  • Single Rally: Choose a team and car to tackle all stages of a single rally, with opponents shown as ghost cars.

  • Championship: Compete across a full season of 16 rallies, each with two to four stages. Players must finish in a set position to advance, with difficulty levels (novice, professional, expert, extreme) determining stage count and required placement. Expert and extreme modes unlock after completing prior difficulties. Points are awarded to the top eight drivers per rally, crowning the season’s champion based on total points. Completing championships unlocks new cars and stages for other modes.

  • Multiplayer: Includes offline “hot-seat” play for up to four players in Time Trial, Single Rally, or Championship modes, and online wireless play for up to eight players racing a single stage, with opponents as ghost cars.

Mechanics and Features

The arcade-style controls simplify driving—no manual gear shifting required—making it accessible yet engaging. A basic damage system affects the car’s appearance, with performance impacts kicking in at expert and extreme difficulty levels. The game supports 30 cars, including Evolution and Extreme spec models, from six official manufacturers and features 17 drivers from the 2004 season. Downloadable content, such as custom player avatars, adds personalization, though limited extras were available at launch.

Presentation and Reception

With a straightforward interface and visuals tailored for the PSP, the game delivers authentic rally environments. While reviews were mixed—praising the variety of modes but noting average graphics and controls (Metacritic: 67/100)—it remains a faithful handheld take on the WRC series, offering depth for rally fans.
