While it shares a name and a basic premise, the PSP version of Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings is a unique adventure, distinct from its console and DS counterparts. Set on the eve of World War II in 1939, the story follows Indy on a globetrotting quest that initially centers on a mysterious jade sphere before the legendary Staff of Moses takes center stage.
The adventure kicks off in Mayan ruins, where Indy is guided by Charles Kingston to discover an ancient astronomy handbook. Their colleague, the reckless Magnus Völler, soon finds himself in over his head, setting events in motion. The plot then jumps ahead to San Francisco, where the sphere becomes a coveted artifact. Indy gets a desperate call from Archie Tan, whose granddaughter has been taken hostage by a Chinese gang, forcing our hero into a dangerous rescue mission through the streets of Chinatown. This propels him on a journey from the jungles of Panama to the mountains of Nepal, slowly unraveling the true power of the Staff of Moses and revealing Völler as the central villain.
Gameplay is a mix of action set-pieces, brawling, and environmental puzzles. Indy can brawl with punches and combos, use his iconic whip and pistol, and interact with the environment. You can grab bottles, chairs, or spears to use as improvised weapons, or manipulate objects to solve puzzles and progress. The levels often feel like intricate mazes, sometimes with time-sensitive objectives.
Exploration is rewarded with hidden collectibles. Completing primary and secondary missions earns you “Glory” and “Fortune” points, which can be spent to permanently upgrade Indy’s abilities—like increasing his health, defense, or attack power—or to unlock bonus content like concept art and gameplay cheats.
