Hakunousterami awakens with a start, plunged into the bewildering virtual world of SE.RA.PH with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Their only path to survival is to fight in a brutal tournament known as the Holy Grail War, where the prize is a wish that can alter reality itself. Guided by a mysterious Servant, they must battle through a labyrinth of foes and uneasy alliances, not only to claim the Grail but to uncover the truth buried within their own lost identity: Who am I?
Fate/Extra presents this struggle through a unique one-on-one fighting system where you take on the role of a Master. While the core goal is to reduce your opponent’s health to zero, the combat is a far cry from a typical button-masher. It’s a high-stakes game of psychological warfare played out in turns. Before each match, you must secretly program a sequence of six commands for your Servant to execute, choosing from Attack, Guard, and Break moves. Your opponent does the same.
This creates a tense rock-paper-scissors dynamic. A well-timed Break shatters a Guard, a Guard blocks an Attack, and an Attack punishes a Break. Correctly predicting your opponent’s pattern three times in a row unlocks a devastating combo that they cannot counter. Beyond this core mechanic, Servants can unleash incredibly powerful special abilities called Noble Phantasms, though these consume large amounts of magical energy.
Victory rewards you with items to strengthen your Servant for the challenges ahead. The entire war takes place within a shadowy dungeon, and your progress is structured in weekly cycles. Each week, you must first complete investigative missions to gather intelligence on your next rival. Only by succeeding in these can you earn the right to face their Servant in a life-or-death duel, slowly climbing the ranks in your desperate quest for answers and survival.
