Koei has launched a fresh chapter in its beloved Dynasty Warriors franchise. While this installment once again draws its epic narrative from the classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it introduces significant changes to the formula that both refine and redefine the experience.

The roster of playable officers will feel familiar to fans of Dynasty Warriors 6, as it carries over the same character list and designs—meaning some veteran favorites from earlier games are unfortunately absent. The biggest shift is in the game’s structure: instead of choosing from a large cast upfront, you now select a single character from your chosen faction (Wei, Wu, or Shu) who operates from a central village. This hub world serves as your home base between battles, where you can prepare, upgrade, and accept new missions.

Unlocking additional characters is now part of the journey—you earn them by completing story objectives. All the weapons, items, and materials you collect along the way are retained, encouraging thoughtful progression.

Character customization is deeper than ever. Your warrior can equip a primary and a secondary weapon, which can be swapped fluidly mid-combat to adapt to any situation. The new Chi system allows you to socket skill gems into four slots (representing arms and legs), granting unique stat boosts and abilities. Furthermore, Orbs can be embedded into weapons to imbue them with elemental powers or other enhancements.

The village is alive with activity. You can trade materials, purchase gear, and acquire new Chi skills and Orbs. Non-playable characters (NPCs) occasionally appear—some offer gifts or quests, while others provide Officer cards that aid in the village’s development. As you progress, the shops gradually offer better inventory.

Missions are accessed by interacting with a quest board or a guard at the gate. Battles unfold across segmented areas filled with enemy troops and officers, culminating in a showdown with the enemy commander. Objectives vary widely: some focus on defeating a key target, while others task you with recovering treasure or reaching a location within a time limit. Succeeding in these bonus goals rewards you with extra experience.

The combat system receives two standout additions: aerial encounters and Fury Mode. Fury Mode replaces the traditional Musou gauge; when full, it unleashes a state of heightened power, granting improved stats, new moves, and a devastating Musou attack.

Adding to the game’s unique flavor are enormous, beast-like siege weapons that require coordinated effort to destroy—ideally with the help of friends. Multiplayer mode supports up to four players via AdHoc connection, making these colossal encounters a thrilling team effort.

This new installment successfully blends classic Dynasty Warriors action with fresh RPG elements and a more personalized campaign, offering a rich and rewarding experience for both new and returning warlords.
