ModNation Racers combines the kart racing of Mario Kart with the creative customization of LittleBigPlanet. You start the game as T.A.G., an aspiring racer in the ModNation Racing Championship (M.R.C.). With your mom as a sponsor and a former racer as your crew chief, you’ll meet a variety of characters as you make your way to the top.
Gameplay
The game introduces you to its core mechanics in your very first race. You’ll learn how to use a variety of weapons and power-ups like rockets, lightning, and speed boosts, which you collect from item pods on the track. Each power-up has three levels; collecting more pods levels up your weapon, making it more powerful. After your first race, you arrive at the ModSpot, the central hub for all M.N.R. participants.
Customization and Creation
At the ModSpot, you are introduced to the game’s robust creation tools, where you can customize your racers and karts. As you progress through the career mode, you can unlock more items by completing specific objectives, like defeating a certain number of opponents or triggering traps. You can also collect up to five tokens on each track and use them at a vending machine to get random new items.
One of the game’s biggest features is the ability to create your own tracks. You can use a variety of tools to design the environment and build your own unique courses. All of your creations—including racers, karts, and tracks—can be shared with other players through the Sharing Center. You can also download and race on tracks created by the community. The ModSpot acts as a social hub, where you can see the top creations of the week, check out featured players, and set up races with friends on both official and custom tracks.
