Back in 1998, Capcom celebrated its legacy with the Capcom Generations series—a five-part collection for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn that compiled 15 of their classic arcade and SNES titles. While primarily released in Japan and PAL territories, each volume was packed with new extras that were a treasure trove for fans, including detailed game histories, strategy tips, and developer voice-over profiles.
This concept was later expanded and brought to a wider audience with the Capcom Classics Collection volumes on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The first collection is essentially a “greatest hits” of the Generations series, bundling together its 15 games and adding the Street Fighter Collection 2 to round out a total of 16 titles. This set is particularly friendly for newcomers, as six of the games feature new simulations designed to help players quickly grasp their plot and gameplay.
The second collection focuses on the remaining classics that weren’t included in the original Generations series. Each collection also boasts unique features. The first volume includes a fantastic “Versus Deluxe Mode” for the Street Fighter II games, allowing two players to battle it out with any character from all three major iterations of the game. The second collection offers a delightful deep cut for Capcom trivia buffs: a faithful port of the arcade game Quiz and Dragons, which is filled with questions all about Capcom itself.
