In Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, you’re at the prestigious Vermillion Peristylium Academy, a training ground for magical warriors. The story centers on Class Zero, a group of 14 students called into action when the Militesi Empire invades the crystal nations. As they fight to protect their homeland of Rubrum, they defeat the forces of Concordia and the Milites, uniting the Orience. However, the final battle comes at a great cost, as two students, Rem and Machina, are critically wounded and turn into crystals. Despite this tragedy, the surviving members of Class Zero press on to defeat their final enemies, creating a new timeline where the war never happened and everyone lives in peace.
The game features an action-based battle system similar to Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. You control a party of three characters, with two of them being controlled by the AI. You can switch between them at any time to best suit the situation. Each of the 14 students has unique characteristics and weapons, and as you gain experience, you’ll unlock special abilities.

In combat, your three characters can use a powerful combined attack called Triad Maneuver to deal massive damage. There are also special “visions” that allow for strategic kills: Kill Vision can instantly take out standard enemies, while Break Vision deals significant damage. The world map is full of various enemies, including familiar monsters from the Final Fantasy universe and special, limited-time foes.

Magic is divided into five main categories, each with different effects, such as “Rifle” which fires in a straight line, and “Missile” which automatically tracks enemies. A great tip is that holding down an action button will charge up your attacks, making them more powerful. Many battles are timed, offering greater rewards for their challenge.

For extra training, you can visit the arena and practice against powerful creatures called Eidolons in a series of up to 20 consecutive battles. Many of these Eidolons are unlocked as you progress through the story.
