Gangs of London plunges players into the ruthless underworld of organized crime, tasking them with rising through the ranks to dominate the streets of London. While its core concept may draw comparisons to the GTA series, the structure is more mission-driven: 70 diverse operations are selected from a menu, each framed by a comic-book narrative and objectives ranging from assassinations and kidnappings to car thefts, escort duties, and wave-based defense scenarios.
Gameplay shifts fluidly between third-person shooting, driving (in first- or third-person), and light stealth sequences where players quietly neutralize patrols. Unlike GTA, there’s no traditional “wanted” system—police only intervene if they witness a crime in progress. At the start, you choose from five distinct gangs, each with unique traits (e.g., the Triads excel in driving speed).
Beyond the campaign, the game offers a surprising variety of side activities: free-roam exploration, taxi driving, photographing landmarks, and even battling zombies. Local multiplayer shines in bar mini-games like darts, bowling, pool, and a Snake-inspired arcade game.
A standout feature is the strategic Conquest Mode, which plays like a criminal version of Risk. You command a syndicate aiming to control London’s 30 districts, using three actions per turn to mobilize units, recruit reinforcements, or deploy bonus cards. With multiple difficulty settings and victory conditions, this mode adds deep replayability to the explosive action of the streets.
