Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects on the PSP pits Marvel’s iconic superheroes against Electronic Arts’ original Imperfects in a fast-paced fighting game. Unlike the console version’s story-driven approach, the PSP edition focuses on pure combat, diverse characters, and a unique card-collecting system that adds strategic depth.

Campaign Mode

The heart of the game lies in its Campaign mode, split into two distinct paths: one for Marvel heroes and one for the Imperfects. Each campaign features ten sequential battles, starting with only The Thing and Johnny Ohm as playable characters. Winning campaigns unlocks additional fighters, new arenas, and more, gradually expanding the roster to ten Marvel characters (including Dr. Doom and Captain America, though Daredevil and Human Torch are absent) and eight Imperfects across seven dynamic arenas.

Combat Mechanics

Fights are intense best-of-three bouts, controlled primarily via the PSP’s analog stick for movement and four face buttons for attacks, jumps, grabs/throws, and locking onto opponents or blocking. Characters with special abilities, like flight or teleportation, use the left shoulder button, while the right shoulder button triggers context-sensitive super moves—enhanced attacks or blocks unique to each fighter. Superpowers rely on a chargeable power meter, with health and power recharging automatically. Stringing together combos fills the Rage Meter, granting temporary unlimited superpowers for devastating plays. Arenas are packed with destructible environments and objects to hurl, adding chaos to the battlefield.

Card Collecting System

A standout feature is the collectible card system. After winning a campaign fight, players earn a medal (gold, silver, or bronze, based on battle duration) and pick one of five face-down cards, ranging from common to rare. Higher medals increase the odds of snagging rarer cards, which fall into four categories: health, defense, power, and strength. These cards offer in-combat boosts like increased attack strength, faster recharges, or extended Rage Meter effects. Some cards are character-specific, usable only by their designated fighter. Players can organize cards into decks in the game’s card book, selecting one deck before each fight. The D-Pad activates cards during combat, with only two card slots available initially—two more unlock as you progress. Combining specific card sets (like all character-specific cards) unlocks extra bonuses. With 173 cards total (including characters and arenas), players can recycle unwanted or duplicate cards for random new ones, weighted by rarity.

Additional Modes

Beyond Campaign mode, Quickplay offers instant battles, while ad-hoc multiplayer lets you face off using unlocked characters, arenas, and card decks for competitive fun.
