Patapon 3 continues the unique rhythm-based strategy of its predecessors, tasking players with leading the Patapon army by drumming out commands in time with the music. Using the four sacred drums—Pon, Pata, Chaka, and Don—you’ll direct your troops to advance, attack, defend, and retreat. This time, however, you’re not playing as an all-seeing deity. Instead, you take on the role of an “Uberhero,” a powerful warrior who leads from the frontlines and can join forces with others in multiplayer mode.
At the start of the game, you choose one of three legendary heroes to resurrect: Taterazay the Shield Hero, Yumiyacha the Archer Hero, or Yarida the Spear Hero. This hero becomes your avatar—the “Mighty One”—and commands a small squad made up of three disciples named Ton, Chin, and Kan. Unlike earlier games, you no longer manage large squads of units. Instead, you focus on customizing your hero and their core team with new gear, abilities, and masks, all of which can be upgraded using experience earned in battle.
A major new feature is the mask system. By trading in masks you’ve collected, you can acquire new ones that grant your Uberhero enhanced powers and abilities. Multiplayer has also been expanded, allowing up to eight players to join forces online and tackle levels cooperatively. Communication is handled through the “Pata-Text” system, a charming and stylized way to coordinate with fellow players without breaking the game’s rhythmic immersion.
