Star Ocean: First Departure is a full-blown remake of the very first Star Ocean game, which originally launched on the Super Famicom but never made it to North America. This PSP version was developed as part of a plan to reintroduce the series’ foundational titles to a new generation of players.
The game isn’t just a simple port; it’s a comprehensive overhaul. It features beautifully enhanced 2D character sprites, completely new 3D environments, and multiple anime cutscenes produced specifically for this release. The developers also added full voice acting, introduced brand-new playable characters to the story, and finally provided an official English translation. Impressively, despite this wealth of new content, the entire experience is contained on a single UMD disc.
The core story remains the beloved classic, following the same essential plot. The game also retains the series’ deep signature mechanics, where characters can develop a wide range of non-combat skills and crafting professions. A nice bonus for fans is that after you’ve unlocked the new anime cutscenes through gameplay, you can rewatch them anytime directly from the main menu.
