Driver 2: Back on the Streets

Driver 2: Back on the Streets, released for the PlayStation in 2000 by Reflections Interactive, is an action-driving game and the sequel to the original Driver. The game follows undercover police officer John Tanner and his new partner, Tobias Jones, as they investigate a major criminal conspiracy.

The story begins in Chicago, where two gangsters, Pink Lenny and a tattooed Brazilian man, are ambushed. The Brazilian man is killed, but Lenny escapes. Tanner and Jones discover that the dead man’s tattoo links him to a powerful Brazilian crime syndicate led by Alvaro Vasquez. Their investigation reveals that Lenny has been laundering money for a criminal named Solomon Caine and has recently defected to Vasquez’s gang. The two detectives must track down Lenny before the two rival gangs’ conflict escalates.

Their chase takes them through four different cities: Chicago, Havana, Las Vegas, and Rio de Janeiro. They must protect witnesses and gather evidence to bring down both criminal organizations.

Gameplay and Features

Driver 2 builds on the core gameplay of the first game, focusing on a mix of cinematic driving and on-foot exploration.

  • Open-World Driving: You control John Tanner and drive a variety of vehicles in four large, open-world cities. The main mission involves completing objectives within a time limit while being chased by enemy vehicles.
  • Car Combat: You can ram into other cars to damage them and knock them off the road. The goal is to either escape the chase or disable the enemy vehicles.
  • On-Foot Gameplay: A major new feature in Driver 2 is the ability to get out of your car and walk around. You can even steal other cars from the street. The game’s story missions sometimes require you to go on foot to talk to characters or complete objectives.
  • Mission Structure: Missions involve a mix of high-speed chases, tailing suspects, and escaping from enemy cars. The game has a “film director” feature that allows you to watch a replay of your chase from different camera angles.
