Resident Evil 2: The Fall of Raccoon City

Resident Evil 2, released in 1998 for the PlayStation, is a survival horror game that tells the story of two characters caught in a zombie apocalypse. On September 29, 1998, a viral outbreak, caused by the T-virus released by the Umbrella Corporation, turns the residents of Raccoon City into bloodthirsty zombies.

The story follows two protagonists who meet by chance in the chaos: Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie police officer on his first day, and Claire Redfield, a college student searching for her brother, Chris. They must work together to find a way out of the city, which is swarming with the undead. Their journey takes them through the Raccoon City Police Department, the sewers, and an underground Umbrella lab, where they uncover a new, more dangerous virus: the G-virus. They also encounter a mysterious spy named Ada Wong, who is on a mission to retrieve a sample of the virus for a secret organization.

Gameplay and Monsters

At the start of the game, you choose to play as either Leon or Claire. Each character has their own unique path, allies, and story elements, though their paths intersect throughout the game. The gameplay is a classic survival horror experience with limited resources, a fixed camera perspective, and slow, deliberate combat.

As you progress, you’ll encounter a variety of terrifying creatures besides the standard zombies, including:

  • Cerberus: Vicious zombie dogs.
  • Licker: A mutated monster with a long tongue and claws.
  • Tyrant: A powerful and near-invincible monster that stalks you relentlessly.
  • G-Virus Creature: A monstrous being that is a central part of the game’s plot and the final boss.

The game is a mix of combat and puzzle-solving. You’ll need to solve a variety of puzzles to unlock new areas and find important items, including new weapons and ammunition. When facing a powerful enemy like a Tyrant, the best strategy is often to stun them and run, conserving your limited ammunition for smaller threats.
