Join the Ghostbusters in this action-adventure game where you capture ghosts, solve puzzles, and save New York from paranormal threats!
Released in 2009, Ghostbusters: The Video Game is an action-adventure title set two years after Ghostbusters II, around Thanksgiving 1991. Players join the iconic Ghostbusters team in New York City as a rookie, training to become a skilled ghost hunter amid a surge of supernatural activity. Developed by Terminal Reality, the game blends third-person shooter mechanics with the franchise’s signature paranormal flair.
Gameplay and Mechanics
As a new recruit, you wield the iconic Proton Pack, firing laser-like proton streams to weaken and capture ghosts. Overusing the pack causes overheating, temporarily disabling it, so timing is key. Once a ghost is sufficiently weakened, players can switch to the Capture Stream to wrangle it into a ghost trap, often using a “Slam” attack to smash it against surfaces for extra damage, making trapping easier. For investigation, players can equip the PKE Meter and goggles, shifting to a first-person view to scan for hidden ghosts and paranormal clues. The game’s controls and mechanics create a dynamic balance of combat and exploration, staying true to the Ghostbusters’ ghost-hunting ethos.
Setting and Story
Set in a bustling New York City teeming with spectral threats, the story follows the Ghostbusters as they train new talent to tackle a rising tide of hauntings. The narrative captures the humor and camaraderie of the films, with the team—psychics, scientists, and eccentrics—guiding your rookie through chaotic missions to save the city from supernatural chaos.
