When the original Guilty Gear burst onto the fighting game scene, it felt fresh and different. Instead of the usual martial arts characters, Arc System Works created a game with an over-the-top, anime-inspired style, filled with wild characters and rocking guitar music. Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R is a fantastic example of what makes this series so special.

This version is widely considered one of the best in the series, offering a nearly perfect gameplay experience. While there are a few minor issues, like the widescreen display and replay functions, they don’t take away from how great the game is for both new and experienced players.

Characters and Gameplay

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R offers a huge roster of 25 playable characters, each with their own unique fighting style and special abilities. Every character has a different mechanic to master. For example:

  • Johnny uses his cane sword and throwing coins to control the screen.
  • Baiken is a samurai who can cancel her opponent’s attacks.
  • Jam can string together a series of special moves in any order she wants.

The game also features a multiplayer mode, so you can jump into battles with other players.

Training and Improvement

To help players get better, this game includes two different training modes: a standard Training Mode and a Trial Mode. The standard training mode is very useful for practicing specific moves and combos, though it can feel a bit clunky at times. The Trial Mode is designed to help you improve your skills by guiding you through a series of specific challenges.

While the game offers modern ways to speed up progress, the best way to get truly good is the old-fashioned way: fight against better players. You’ll lose a lot at first, but each loss is an opportunity to learn what you’re doing wrong and practice until you get better.
