Legend (PlayStation): A 3D Beat-em-up

Legend is a 3D beat-em-up game released in 1998 for the PlayStation. It’s a remake of the classic Super Nintendo game of the same name and was developed by Toka, which included key members from the original’s development team.

Story

The game is set in the kingdom of Tavakia, which has fallen into chaos. The King’s evil brother, who was exiled for trying to assassinate the King, returns with dark powers he learned from a Dark Sorcerer. To get his revenge, he enlists the help of a powerful demon named Morlock the Soulthief. The two form a pact: in exchange for his help in taking over the kingdom, Morlock will get the souls of every person in Tavakia.

One day, while the King’s loyal guards—Axel, Tara, and Karo—are on duty, a gargoyle breaks into the throne room and kidnaps the King. Axel, Tara, and Karo must now go on a quest to rescue the King and defeat the evil alliance of the felonious brother and Morlock.

Characters

You can choose to play as one of the three lifeguards, each with their own unique fighting style:

  • Axel: The well-rounded character, good with all types of weapons.
  • Tara: A fast character who excels with light weapons.
  • Karo: A strong but slow character who is best with heavy weapons.

Gameplay and Features

Legend is a side-scrolling hack-and-slash game. You’ll fight your way through five different stages, each with its own theme and enemies:

  • Stage 1: Dark Forest
  • Stage 2: The City
  • Stage 3: Arena
  • Stage 4: Evil Church
  • Stage 5: Dark Fortress

The game features an impressive range of weapons, including a Sword, Knives, a Heavy Axe, a Crossbow, and Magic Gauntlets. You can also pick up and use a variety of weapons dropped by enemies. The game was praised for its graphics, which could handle a lot of characters on screen at once, and for its smooth, non-stop action.
