Metal Gear Solid, released in 1998 for the PlayStation, is a groundbreaking stealth-action game. It follows legendary operative Solid Snake on a mission to infiltrate a nuclear weapons facility on a remote island called Shadow Moses. His objective is to neutralize the threat posed by FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit that has taken control of the base and is threatening the world with a nuclear strike.

Gameplay and Stealth Mechanics

The game is a masterclass in stealth. The core gameplay revolves around avoiding detection by enemy guards and security cameras. The game uses a top-down camera view for most of the gameplay, which gives you a tactical overview of the area.

• Alert System: If you’re spotted, a “Danger Mode” is triggered, and a countdown timer starts. Guards will swarm your location, and you must hide and evade them until the timer runs down to zero and the game returns to “Infiltration Mode.”
• Stealth Techniques: To avoid detection, you can use various techniques like crawling through air vents, pressing yourself against walls, and using your surroundings to stay out of the enemy’s line of sight. You can also use items like a cardboard box to hide or distract enemies by making a loud noise.
• Radar: A key tool is the Soliton radar, which shows you the location of enemies, their field of vision, and the layout of the area. When you’re in an alert state, the radar becomes scrambled, forcing you to rely on your instincts.

VR Training and Challenges

The game includes a dedicated VR Training Mode, a series of virtual missions designed to help you practice your stealth and combat skills. This mode is divided into different types of challenges:

• Practice: Teaches you the fundamental movements and stealth techniques.
• Weapons Mode: Focuses on using different firearms and grenades.
• Shooting: A test of your accuracy and speed.

Completing all of these challenges unlocks a special Survival Mission, a difficult challenge where you must complete 10 consecutive levels with a time limit. This mode is a true test of the skills you’ve learned.
